It measures the amount of motor current which shall be indicative of the force that it experiences in shutting and opening the door — and if the current is too high, it reverses direction and tries again twice more. This allows for detection of something that is in the way of the door closing — perhaps a chicken, upon which it should escape after being squeezed a little.
