Replacing 2 wire dampers: Many users tire of replacing 2 wire spring motors as spring return motors have a higher failure rate for two reasons: (1) overheating since they pull power continuously when energized; and (2) additional stresses of the spring. The SD3085 does require 3 wires between the zone panel and thermostat. Check the cable running to your present damper, as many times 4 conductor cable is run, with only two wires used. Many zone panels are already set up for 3 wire dampers. Check your damper outputs to see if a “norm open” or “M4” terminal is present and unused – if so you are good to go! If your zone panel has just a 2 wire output, you can still use this damper by using a third connection from the zone panel thermostat “R”, which is the continuous hot side of the transformer. Controlling directly from a thermostat with no relay needed: You can have the advantages of 3 wire power with no relay when connecting directly to a thermostat. Here is how it works: Since the Belimo LMB motor is “smart”, with an on-board microprocessor, it has a couple of wiring tricks. In this case, 24vac power is wired full time to terminal 1 and 2 on the motor. Then, the jumped W and Y outputs from the thermostat are wired to terminal 3. Anytime the motor gets power from the thermostat on terminal 3, the dampers open and when the thermostat drops power to terminal 3, the damper closes – It’s that simple. No relays, and 3 wires means no wasted heat or hot motors. You can also operate the damper from a simple single pole light switch, in this same manner. Stopping Damper anywhere in its range: The Belimo LMB motor features a gear train that will hold the damper blade in position, in the air stream, when power is removed from the motor. So, when used with a single pole, double throw, center off switch (SPDT center off), you can stop the damper anywhere in its arc of travel and it will hold its position.
