The pancake probe is greatly preferred overthe less-sensitive probes: end-window or side-window. This preference arises mainlybecause pancake probes have high sensitivity. Their disadvantage is that pancakes areALTITUDE-SENSITIVE, and can become damaged if carried to heights above 8,000ft. above sea level. The sensor in a geiger PANCAKE PROBE is sensitive to geiger responses, but it isalso FRAGILE in the sense that it is ALTITUDE-SENSITIVE. If the geiger probeis carried to heights above 8,000 ft., the sensor-detector will explode and becomeworthless. This specific geiger sensor is # 7311, made by the LND Company atOceanside NM. In a mountainous region, many of the geiger mineral fields are athigh elevation, so this risk is real. Even when the sensor-detector is replaced directly from the factory, the cost can be #130.00 plus shipping plus sales tax; this total can easily push the total cost to $160.00, or even higher with today'sinflation. In my nine years (2014-2023) experience collecting active mineral rocks in the field,I have ruined FIVE sensor-detectors from my probes. TWO ruined the membranewhile I used them myself measuring rocks in the field on hot summer June days; TWOwere ruined when the Post Office transported two mailed complete geiger counter kitsBY AIRPLANE rather than by surface / road. ONE more was ruined when I triedinstalling it myself into the geiger probe; LND supplies NO INSTRUCTIONS for insalling this vital but expensive probe component. This plastic cannister will protect your pancake sensor. It has a sturdy black rubberseal that fits between the main unit and its cap. The pancake probe could be carriedin checked luggage on an airplane, OR in a vehicle that travels in mountainous regionsabove 8,000. ft elevation. The cannister must be opened SLOWLY during a five-secondtime interval, so that the air pressures inside and outside the cannister are equalizedSLOWLY, not with a "pop." Presently (February 2023) I only have these plastic airtight cannisters in BLUE color.When the present cannisters are sold and I must replace the supplies, I will try toget a variety of colors so that color choices are available to buyers.
